FOR THE DAY OF RECKONING CONFERENCE IN
SELMA & MONTGOMERY, AL

February 27- March 2

Prepare for an unforgettable experience at the Anarchy, Lucy, Betsey Day of Reckoning Part 4. We will convene at the historic Riverfront in Montgomery, the site of a significant brawl in history. Early registration begins on February 27 at 6:00 PM, where you can enjoy a scenic boat ride on the Harriott along with light refreshments. Our gathering kicks off on February 28 at 8:00 AM at the Southern Poverty Law Center, a landmark known for its role in the fight for voting rights and its connection to the civil rights movement.

This inaugural session will take place in a historic venue where battles against the oppression of Black individuals unfolded in the late 60’s regarding access to the ballot box. After a full day of discussions and activities, we will head to Freedom Monument Park, where we will explore the history of Black enslavement through the lens of art and historical context.

On March 1, we will journey to Selma, Alabama, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the voting rights march. We will delve into the history of midwifery and maternal healthcare during the turbulent Jim Crow era, meeting women who were pioneers of the movement at just 14 years old. Our guide, Joanne Bland, will provide insights from her youthful perspective as we visit significant locations that supported Black communities during mass gatherings, including hospitals that cared for those in need during segregation.

Together, we will carry signs advocating for equitable maternal health, reproductive justice, and bodily autonomy. After crossing the iconic bridge, we’ll return to Montgomery, stopping at a farm for dinner as we reenact the stars for freedom with a live band and horse rally leading up to the final day of the march.

On that last day, we will bolster our commitment at the State Capitol with an inspiring guest closing plenary. Join us as we honor our past and fight for a just future.

Edmund Pettus Bridge

The Edmund Pettus Bridge, now a National Historic Landmark, was the site of the brutal Bloody Sunday beatings of civil rights marchers during the first march for voting rights. The televised attacks were seen all over the nation, prompting public support for the civil rights activists in Selma and for the voting rights campaign. After Bloody Sunday, protestors were granted the right to continue marching, and two more marches for voting rights followed.
